Assessment task details and instructions

Write a 2000-word essay based on one of the case studies provided for this module.

Select one case study from those available in the assessment folder in Blackboard. Using that case study, discuss the factors affecting occupational performance, the evidence that could be used to inform practice and propose an approach to intervention with the individual.

The suggested structure for the case study essay is as follows:

Part 1: Factors affecting occupational performance 500 words

Introduce the individual in the case study, critically exploring how their medical condition and contextual factors impact occupational performance. (ILO1, ILO 4)

Part 2: Evidence to inform practice 500 words

Evaluate the usefulness of specific types of evidence (such as guidelines, narrative and research evidence) and debate the use of this evidence in practice. Explain how to search for appropriate research evidence to support occupational therapy practice with the individual  (ILO 3). Use tables to support this part.

Part 3: Approach to intervention 1000 words

Identify, explain and evaluate theoretical approaches that could be used to support occupational therapy intervention with the individual. Explain how theory could influence assessment, goal-setting, intervention and evaluation (ILO 2, ILO5, ILO6).

Tables may be used to support the work. For example, it is acceptable to include a table in Part 2 to summarise a literature search strategy. Resources including example tables are included in the assessment folder in blackboard.

In each of the sections, include reference to a range of literature. Provide a clear argument in each section and critique information presented.

  • If any piece of work names or easily identifies a service or colleague, comment will be made regarding poor academic practice, and this will be noted in marking.

Assessment Criteria

The assessment marking criteria (rubric) is included in the assessment folder on Blackboard. You should review the assessment criteria to find out what we are specifically looking at during the assessment. If any aspects of this are unclear, please ask during an assessment tutorial or using the online discussion board.

Using Artificial Intelligence (AI) Tools

For this assessment you may use tools, software, or features of software which use artificial intelligence to generate content such as text, images or data, in an assistive and supportive capacity. This means you may use the tool to explore the topic, generate or process data, or suggest draft structures and refine the wording of your work. However, the final work you submit must be your own. Case study

Case study Priya

Priya Shah, a 68-year-old retired woman, was once the CEO of a multinational corporation based in London. She comes from an affluent family, who originate from India. Priya holds strong cultural ties to her heritage. Throughout her career, she remained very active, enjoying running, hiking, and participating in various charity events. Having had the finances and freedom to travel, Priya and her husband, Jacob, have spent much of their retirement years exploring new parts of the world. Priya has a deep love for cultural exploration and is particularly fond of visiting historical sites in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. Their trips have been a mix of leisure, adventure, and learning, with Priya seeking out experiences that expand her understanding of different cultures and perspectives. In addition to her love for travel, Priya is also passionate about giving back to the community. She has been involved in various charitable organisations. She regularly volunteers at local shelters and food banks, where she uses her leadership skills to organise fundraising events and community outreach programs. Her efforts have not only provided essential resources to those in need but have also inspired others in her community to get involved and make a difference. In her personal life, Priya enjoys spending time with friends and family, often hosting gatherings at her home with Jacob. These events are filled with music, dance, and food, creating a vibrant and joyful atmosphere. Priya also loves gardening and has transformed her backyard into a beautiful oasis, where she spends her mornings tending to her plants and flowers. Her home is a reflection of her love for nature and her cultural roots, providing a serene and welcoming space for all who visit. Priya was recently at her weekly dance class, where she experienced a fall. She has been seen in A&E and has been diagnosed with a fractured neck of femur and has consequently undergone a total hip replacement. While still an inpatient, Priya was referred to the occupational therapy team in the orthopaedic ward. The referral states that the total hip replacement was successful, but there is evidence of osteoporosis, leading to the fracture. The department have a policy of following hip precautions and support people to return home following surgery. It is stated that Priya is optimistic and keen to return to her usual activities.
