SESSION LEARNING OUTCOMES

WEEK1

SESSION 1a- ACCESSING INFORMATION

  • To demonstrate and give practice in accessing and using the university IT systems (hardware, wifi, email, software and apps)
  • To demonstrate and give practice in accessing and navigating “Canvas”, the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) in use at the university.
  • To develop understanding of the keeping of a reflective journal / learning diary.
  • To clarify the course structure, assessment and learning aims.
  • To develop understanding of the library systems (catalogue, my module resources, reservations) and how to get the most out of them

SESSION 1b- STUDYING AT UNIVERSITY

  • To allow students to reflect on expectations of their time at university and explore study habits

SESSION 2a- SEMINARS AND DISCUSSIONS

  • To understand the role of seminars and discussions in academic study.
  • To identify the roles of seminar leaders and participants
  • To give mini practice in the above.
  • To evaluate and reflect on performance in seminars and discussions (online and face- to- face)

  • To reflect on reasons for business success.
  • To identify key business and economic terms.

WEEK 3

SESSION 3a- PRESENTATION SKILLS

  • To define a presentation and identify key features
  • To reflect on and discuss previous experiences of delivering and watching presentations.
  • To discuss and explore tips for better presentations.
  • To explore practical techniques for thinking about content, structure, language and delivery to improve presentation skills.

SESSION 3b- READING AND RESEARCH AT UNIVERSITY

  • To explore and reflect on both personal reading habits and reading for university study.
  • To explore and raise awareness of reading speed and comprehension via a practical task.
  • To develop a fuller understanding of subject specific academic research techniques and tools.
  • To raise awareness of evaluating online resources.

WORKSHOP FOLLOW UP / ACTIVATION TASK:  Examine example annotated text from session and read and annotate improving reading speed and improving reading comprehension texts, access an article and practice techniques + reflective journal entry 6.

 WEEK 4

SESSION 4a –READING WEEK / ADVICE CLINIC

  • To give opportunities for formative assessment of reflective journal entries completed to date
  • To give opportunities for mini tutorials / advice clinic
  • To explore and develop business vocabulary for later sessions and modules via online self-study exercises
  • To give an opportunity to practice and record a mini presentation

SESSION 5a- THE NATURE OF ACADEMIC ARGUMENT

  • To define an argument, an academic argument and critical thinking 
  • To develop an awareness of and recognise common features of an academic argument.
  • To develop a greater understanding of the meaning of critical thinking and its role in academic argument via practical subject specific tasks.
  • To develop a fuller understanding of academic integrity and   academic voice.
  • To identify causes and examples of plagiarism and raise awareness of techniques for avoiding it.

SESSION 5b- ACADEMIC WRITING (TACKLING ASSIGNMENTS)

  • To explore and activate knowledge of assignment requirements by analysing titles.
  • To develop an awareness and understanding of the stages involved in producing an assignment via a worked subject specific example.

SESSION 6a- GRADUATE ATTRIBUTES, JOB SATISFACTION AND TEAMWORK

  • To describe key concepts around theories of motivation and team working.
  • To revise seminar and discussion techniques (leading, participating, summarising etc) via a pyramid discussion seminar.

SESSION 6b- GRADUATE ATTRIBUTES: PROBLEM SOLVING

  • To give practice in meeting based problem-solving and discussion techniques
