Create a graphical depiction of well-known for you person and the things that shape you with relative size
Cross Cultural Issues in Lifespan Development
MODULE PROJECT GUIDELINES
The Module Project has four components: your psychoautobiography, a reflexive journal, a graphical depiction, and IPA methods analysis of your psychobiography. For the Final Project, you should:
- Create a graphical depiction of well-known for you person and the things that shape you with relative size. (Note: You may find it helpful to reference the “Graphical Representations” handout in this week’s Learning Resources when completing this part of the assignment.) This component of the assignment will not factor into the word count for the Final Project.
- Psycho autobiography: A psychobiography is a case study method generally used to understand the psychological development and motivation of historically important figures such as Gandhi. The focus of this component of the assignment is to describe the life span development of one person you know very well. This will be a study of this person development over life span—a psycho autobiography. The psycho autobiography should be written as in informal reflective journal.
You are to construct a psycho autobiography using the readings and other resources from this course.
- Organize psycho autobiography into the following phases:
- Early Childhood (Birth–5 years)
- Middle Childhood (6–11 years)
- Early Adolescence (12–14 years)
- Adolescence (15–18 years)
- Emergent Adulthood (18–25 years)
- Adulthood (25–45 years)
- Middle Age (45–60 years)
- In each of the phases, touch upon the following development areas as applicable:
- Biological/Physical
- Intellectual/Cognitive
- Social-emotional and Moral (Relational—Peers, Friendships, `Intimacy`, Social Skills, Personal Identity, Psychological Adjustment, etc.)
- Personal Identity (Which groups are you aligned to?)
Important note: This is not simply a recounting of a life story. This component of the assignment is to be an interpretive account of a person`s psychological development over their life span development. There should be clear inclusion of constructs and theories from the module to provide the basis for the interpretations offered in the narrative.
A psychoautobiography is a revealing experience for those who conduct it, but some people may feel uncomfortable recalling past events or exposing them to others. In this regard, please bear in mind that you do not need to focus on negative experiences when choosing the important events that guided your development - you might recall, for example, the happiness of the holidays with your family, or the teacher who `opened` your eyes, or the stories that your grandparents told you. Also, rest assured that your assignment will only be accessed by the instructor in your class (though it may also be seen by the staff in charge of moderation and monitoring); your classmates will have no access to your assignment, as you will have no access to theirs. If despite of the above, you still feel uncomfortable recalling or sharing your experiences, you might prefer to conduct the anonymized psychobiography and IPA of another person close to you (a relative or a friend). If that is the case, please consult with your instructor before the start of your assignment -they will not question your decision, but they will clearly explain how to proceed. Likewise, please discuss with your instructor any concerns you may have about ethics or privacy in this assignment.
- IPA Methods Analysis of your psycho autobiography: For this component of the assignment, you should use IPA methods to analyse your psycho autobiography. Provide a table that identifies the major and sub-ordinate themes from your analysis and examples from your psycho autobiography for each. Note: This table will not factor into the total word count for the Final Project.
- Once your IPA analysis is complete, provide a discussion on your findings highlighting relevant concepts from IPA methodology as well as developmental theories. The discussion on findings should also bring in the relevant research literature to support your analysis. Incorporate an analysis of your reflexive journal (below) and discuss the impact of your own values and experiences on your analysis of the data.
- Reflexive Journal: Keeping a Reflexive Journal is an important part of carrying out IPA in order to promote reflexivity in your work as a qualitative researcher. For this component of the assignment, keep a journal during your IPA research process. You should record your reflections on what is occurring during your engagement in the research process based on your values, interests, and experiences. This is a good place to highlight where biases could exist during your analysis. Identify here how your values and experiences could impact how your analyse the data from your psycho autobiography. The reflexive journal should be submitted as a component of the Final Project. Note: It will be helpful to review Wyatt (2007) from this week’s learning resources to better understand reflexivity and using a reflexive journal prior to starting the Final Project.
The Final Project should be 2,500 words in length.
