In recent decades, aviation manufacturers have been one of the most effective drivers of reducing the impact of aviation on the environment. This has enabled the global aviation industry to grow more sustainably and minimise the environmental footprint of the industry. For this assessment, you are to choose ONE aircraft manufacturer, engine manufacturer or MRO organisation. You are to critically evaluate the organisations approach to sustainable aviation in the form of an essay of 1,250 words. You should evaluate how the aviation organisation has implemented environmental management systems (EMSs). The essay should include examples of policies, plans and initiatives, a discussion on how these are implemented and monitored and the role of management in ensuring continuous improvement.

Your essay will be assessed on the following criteria:
• Research and Use of Literature - 20%
• Content, Knowledge and Understanding – 30%
• Analysis, Synthesis and Evaluation – 20%
• Organisation and Coherence – 10%
• Clarity of Expression – 10%
• Quality of Referencing – 10%

The question is on sustainability and how the organisation has used EMS to try to improve their performance in this area. So one or many is fine. However, you need to ask yourself what you can achieve in 1250 +/- 10% words as the key is to use EMS theory / framework to underpin the essay. Too many policies for example, will be extremely difficult to critically analyse in the essay constraints.

In 2004, ICAO adopted three major environmental goals, to:

(i) limit or reduce the number of people affected by significant aircraft noise;

(ii) limit or reduce the impact of aviation emissions on local air quality; and

(iii) limit or reduce the impact of aviation greenhouse gas emissions on the global climate.
