You are hired as a laboratory technician in Anatomy (developmental) laboratory. After a year posting, you are expected to submit a report showing good understanding of basic structural and function features of cell, DNA, RNA, steps in mitosis and meiosis cell division and cell cleavages in different species like frog, chick, and human embryos. Your report should be professional and portrait good scientific knowledge, clear and concise presentation including appropriate diagrams and slides of microscopic features and references using Vancouver system.

Unit Learning Outcomes
|
LO1 Describe the structural and functional features of eukaryotic cells
LO2 Describe the organization of DNA and RNA in eukaryotic cells
LO3 Explain the events of the cell cycle, mitosis, and meiosis
LO4 Explain how cleavage and gastrulation result in germ layer formation.
|
Assignment Brief and Guidance
|
Task 1:
1. Draw and label the diagram of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells in animals and plants with its organelles after a good microscopic view and examination of the prepared Human, plant cells and given electron micrograph pictures.
|
- Tabulate the subcellular organelles and discuss its functions, highlighting the interdependence of organelles in protein secretion
- Examine the types of endocytosis and exocytosis with its similarities and differences.
Unit 4: Cell Biology
|
Task 2: (Use illustrations wherever needed)
- Illustrate the structure of DNA and types of RNA. Identify their storage in cell.
- Discuss the steps in Transcription with the use of diagrams.
|
Task 3: (Use illustrations wherever needed)
- Describe the phases of cell cycle with its check points.
- Compare and contrast the process of mitosis and meiosis with its different phases.
- Analyse the specific phase / process which helps to diversify the DNA of an embryonic cells to its parent’s somatic cells.
|
Task 4: (Use illustrations wherever needed)
- Clarify how the holoblastic and meroblastic cleavages determined by the amount and distribution of yolk affect the cleavage.
- Present gastrulation process of sea star, amphibian, chick, and embryo with its different stages.
- Assess the similarities of chick and human gastrulation.
- Evaluate the gastrulation process and formation of different tissue from 3 germ layers.
