Provide a literature review which critically evaluates and analyses the available literature on visual signalling/courtship as cues for mate choice in birds. The review should look to highlight areas for further research.

 

The review needs to incorporate discussion of the mechanisms of signal production, reception and perception used and why these may have evolved in this way. For example, you might consider why in some contexts a visual signal may have been more adaptive than an auditory signal.

 

The review also needs to link to the evolution and ontogeny of the signals/courtship behaviours being discussed/reviewed. Reference to and evaluation of well established theory will be beneficial here. 

 

Aim to structure your review as though you are leading towards a specific research aim/question which could then be progressed into a hypothetical research project/question. Consider the strength of the evidence/research which you are discussing, rather than just listing and describing examples. Show critical analysis of current and seminal research and use a wide range of research based examples to explain and evaluate the theories.
