Module Learning Outcomes

Students who successfully complete this module will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a broad understanding of the knowledge base of this module, and its terminology and discourse (with specific reference to transmission media, data encoding, transmission modes, error detection and correction, flow control, multiplexing, switching techniques, and routing);
  2. Identify and evaluate the principles and concepts underlying theoretical frameworks highlighted in this module, and demonstrate an ability to identify their strengths and weaknesses, especially in relation to the evolving networking scene (covering network topologies, protocols, layering, standardisation);
  3. Collect and evaluate information from a variety of authoritative sources to inform a choice of solutions to standard data communication and network problems highlighted in this module, including online open source and subscription-only literature;
  4. Evaluate the reliability of data and information provided in this module, using pre-defined techniques and/or criteria, especially in relation to free resources.

Assignment brief

This is an individual assignment designed to allow students to demonstrate abroad understanding, knowledge of the principles of networking technologies and the ability to research, analyse and evaluate common network underpinning principles and standards. It will also assess and evaluate the strength of student’s analytical abilities.

Scenario

You are required to research one of the technologies listed below and produce a report that: educates your fellow students.

  • Li-Fi technology.
  • Ad hoc Networks e.g. Vehicular ad-hoc network
  • Body sensor networks / Wireless body sensor networks
  • Wireless regional area network (WRAN)
  • Any other topic agreed upon with the tutor

You report should investigate and analyse the underpinning network technologies based on which selected technology is working, exploring and evaluating these technologies, knowing that the underlying technologies are not immune, and hence using these technologies will inherent all vulnerabilities, a research is utmost important to evaluate and educate follow students of concern such as the usability, security, regulation and potential and future applications.

Task

You are required to research, analyse, evaluate and identify potential use of this type of data communication, covering the issues related to the underlying networking technology and exploring potential application.
