Introduction
Concepts from Management Skills are helpful in understanding and analysing the world around us. We may be unaware of the large number of settings where management theories can be applied. This assignment will heighten your awareness of how management issues can be applied to the world in which you operate by providing an opportunity to apply theories to issues presented in the media.
Media Search
Select one module from the text on which to focus your assignment.
Search the 6 media categories listed below for media items that can be clearly linked to Management Skills concepts or theories from that one chapter. You are looking for media items that can be analysed using theories or models, not items that directly describe a Management Skills concept.
For example, you might read a newspaper article about a basketball coach who inspired her team to victory, and you might select a motivation theory to analyse this story (or a leadership theory or a theory on teams).
Websites Relevant, reputable websites.
Newspaper articles Newspaper article, from a newspaper published in English anywhere in the world.
Module 4 Competency 3 Fueling and Fostering Innovation From the text book, page 283.
The article should be from a topic related to Fueling and Fostering Innovation, and should be summarised with point from the textbook and also follow the below commentary instruction.
Magazine articles Article from Business Week, The Economist, Fortune, or Canadian Business.
Module 4 Competency 5 Implementing and Sustaining Change. From the text book, page 306
The article should be from a topic related to Implementing and Sustaining Change, and should be summarised with point from the textbook and also follow the below commentary instruction.
Commentary (1 page max) For each media item, your commentary should do the following three things (probably in three separate sections):
Summarize the media item (i.e., the magazine, news paper article, website, etc.) so that someone unfamiliar with it would understand what it is about. If the item has multiple facets, indicate on which facet you are going to focus your analysis.
Briefly present and discuss the management theory, model, or concept from that chapter in the text that you are going to use to analyse the item you selected. For example, you might use expectancy theory, goal setting theory, emotional intelligence, transformational leadership, and so forth. Do not use any theory, model, or concept more than once. Be sure to cite your textbook.
Portfolio
Your portfolio assignment will be bound as one document in a soft-covered folder with either brads or rings to allow your portfolio to be easily read and evaluated.
No loose pieces of paper
No sheet protectors because that makes it difficult to mark each item and add comments as needed
Media Item Each media item will be neatly organized and labelled; tabs on the items are helpful. Newspaper articles may be photocopied or cut and pasted onto 8 ½ X 11 paper. Magazine articles may be photocopied or printed onto 8 ½ X 11 paper. Each item must indicate the complete source from which it came. Discuss how the media item you selected relates to the theory/model/concept that you selected. Provide a clear example from the media item.
