The sketch (NOT to scale at all) shows cross section of the cutting of a proposed roadway. This section of the road is to be 50m in length and the cutting will be 35m wide with its base at a level of 42m AOD, the maximum level to which the cutting can extend is 50m AOD. The ground conditions are as shown in the figure. The ground water level is approximately parallel to the ground surface and fluctuates between 4.5m and 5m depth. The ground has a natural slope of about 1:8.
Investigate a feasible safe slope angle which will minimise the volume of soil to be excavated using the data provided, the results of the laboratory tests and Geoslope. Consider the drained and undrained cases and investigate the effect of the fluctuating water table on the slope factor of safety. What other engineering solutions might be appropriate?
