Description
During my clinical placement as a student nurse, I encountered an instance where delegation played a significant role in patient care. A senior nurse delegated tasks to team members, including the preparation of patient medication schedules, completing a wound dressing, and chart updates. I was assigned to support with charting, while another team member was tasked with the wound dressing. However, a delay in completing the dressing caused distress to the patient, which subsequently raised concerns among staff. This situation emphasised the importance of effective delegation and prioritisation of tasks.
Feelings
Initially, I felt a mix of pride and apprehension when assigned a key role within the team. The pride stemmed from being entrusted with responsibility, while the apprehension arose from the possibility of underperforming in a critical situation. As the delay unfolded, I felt frustrated on behalf of the patient and disappointed in our communication as a team. I began to question whether I could have played a more proactive role in addressing the issue.
