The way I work with children and young people makes a big difference to how they develop. Every action I take, whether small or big, can help them grow or hold them back.
If I plan and set up activities that are safe, interesting and suitable for their age, children are more likely to learn new skills and feel proud of themselves. For example, giving them puzzles, creative play or outdoor games can build confidence, problem-solving and physical ability. But if I do not prepare activities properly or give them enough support, they may miss out on learning opportunities and become less interested.
The way I speak and listen to children also matters. When I use kind words, praise their efforts and listen to their thoughts, they feel respected and valued. This helps them to build self-esteem and trust. If I was rude, dismissive or didn’t pay attention, it could damage their confidence and stop them from sharing their ideas.
Children also watch how adults behave. By showing patience, respect and fairness, I act as a role model and encourage them to copy these positive behaviours in their own friendships. If I behaved unfairly or reacted badly, children might copy that too, which could affect how they get along with others.
Lastly, following workplace rules and policies, such as safeguarding, equality and inclusion, helps protect children and make sure everyone is treated fairly. If I ignored these, it could put children at risk and harm their wellbeing and development.
