Critical Reflection on My Contribution to the Assignment on SMART Objectives and Pre-Tax Return on Capital Employed
This reflection critically examines my contribution to writing the assignment focused on SMART objectives in relation to pre-tax return on capital employed. The purpose of the assignment was to demonstrate understanding of how financial performance indicators can be supported through clear, structured managerial objectives. Reflecting on my role in the writing process has helped me recognise both the strengths of my approach and areas where my academic and analytical skills could be improved.
At the planning stage, my main contribution was shaping the direction of the assignment. I focused on ensuring that the discussion of SMART objectives remained clearly connected to pre-tax ROCE, rather than treating the two concepts separately. This required careful interpretation of the brief to avoid turning the work into a purely financial explanation. I deliberately avoided calculations and instead concentrated on explaining how objective setting can influence the efficient use of capital and operational decision making. This demonstrated an awareness of the assessment requirements and helped keep the work relevant and focused.
One strength of my contribution was the structured approach I adopted when writing the assignment. I ensured that each SMART element was discussed in a logical sequence and linked back to managerial accountability and performance improvement. This helped create coherence across the assignment and supported a critical tone rather than a descriptive one. By consistently linking objectives to organisational outcomes, such as improved capital efficiency and profitability, I showed an understanding of how strategic planning supports financial performance in practice.
However, reflecting critically, I recognise that my writing could have engaged more deeply with alternative perspectives. While I explained the benefits of SMART objectives for improving ROCE, I gave less attention to potential limitations, such as rigid target setting or short-term performance pressure. Including a more balanced discussion would have strengthened the critical depth of the assignment and demonstrated greater analytical maturity.
Another area for improvement relates to academic confidence. At times, I relied on cautious language to avoid making unsupported claims. While this reduced risk, it also limited the strength of some arguments. Developing greater confidence in synthesising theory and practice would allow me to write more assertively while remaining academically sound.
Overall, my contribution to the assignment was effective in meeting the learning outcomes. I demonstrated an ability to interpret a financial performance concept through a management lens and apply reflective thinking to objective setting. This reflection has highlighted the importance of deeper critical engagement and self-awareness in academic writing. Going forward, I will aim to challenge assumptions more actively and strengthen my evaluative voice when discussing business and performance-related topics.
