Select one of the following and consider what opportunities it provides for two of the following: input, output, negotiation for meaning, noticing, or explicit knowledge:
- an observed language lesson (see below)
- a second language learning coursebook unit (two examples will be provided, or you can select your own)
- Begin by outlining the underlying approach taken by the teacher or author (e.g. linguistic syllabus, task-based learning)
- Define your chosen concepts and explain why they are important in second language acquisition.
- Analyse the lesson or materials with respect to your chosen concepts.
- Discuss how you could improve the lesson/materials to provide more opportunities for learning with respect to one or more of the factors you discussed.
Observed language lesson: DVDs of language lessons are available on the 3rd floor of the library in the AV resources section. The shelfmark for the DVDs is 370.711/CAR. The DVDs are numbered 1-12. You may use 9, 10 or 12. The DVDs cannot be taken out of the library. There are 2 TVs with DVD players on the 3rd floor.

The starting point for your reading for this assignment should be the core texts that we have been using throughout the module: Ellis & Shintani (2014), Lightbown & Spada (2013) and Nava & Pedrazzini (2018). There are also several books on approaches to language teaching/language teaching methodology on the resource list.
If you do a general search for relevant journal articles, please use the journal databases provided by the library and not Google Scholar. Many of the articles on Google Scholar are published in poor-quality journals which are not peer-reviewed. Some of these articles are basically master’s level essays.
