Module 3 assignment
Setting the scene
Describe a module relevant to your professional setting, including a description of the level and number of learners and available resources for an assessment strategy.
Define the competencies, and associated learning outcomes (4-5) you want your learners to achieve by the end of the module.
Create a blueprint outlining which assessment techniques would be appropriate for the assessment of each of these learning outcomes. Outline the purpose and weighting of your chosen techniques.
Please describe the method(s) by which you would define the minimally competent learner.
In no more than 2,000 words (+/-10%) , reflect on your choice of assessment techniques, overall assessment strategy, and approach to marking and standard-setting, considering the core concepts discussed in module 3 as outlined below.
Task 1 – Defining learning outcomes and associated competencies
Throughout this programme, you have practiced defining the learning outcomes and competencies that you expect your learners to achieve. Reflect on the difficulties that you have faced in defining your learning outcomes for this task and how your practice in defining LOs has changed through this exercise and compared to your approach prior to this program. Are your LOs written as SMART goals? Are there any domains of learning for which you find LOs particularly difficult to articulate?
Task 2 –Choosing assessment techniques for Constructive alignment, addressing the needs of different stakeholders
Reflect on your approach to selection of assessment techniques, including core components of the utility index, domain and level of your learners, and purpose of the assessment strategy. Compared to your prior practice, how has the learning in this module and this program changed your approach to the selection of assessment techniques? Reflect on the competing interests of the various stakeholders in your institution. Does this influence your choice of assessment types used?
Task 3 –Blueprinting an assessment and marking rubrics
Reflect on the challenges you faced in blueprinting your assessment strategy. Did you identify any areas of redundancy in your strategy? Did you find the process useful to ensure that all LOs were appropriately assessed? Did you find the process useful in determining what assessment techniques complement each other to enhance the reliability and validity of your overall assessment strategy? Consider the marking scheme you use for your assessments. Has your learning in this module provided you with ideas to safeguard against potential bias or other sources of measurement error?
Task 4 – Defining the minimally competent candidate
Reflect on your experience in standard setting. Have you used formal methods to define cut scores in previous assessment designs? Has your learning in this module changed your approach to defining the minimally competent candidate? Do you think it is possible to use these methods to discriminate between “good” and “excellent” learners?
