Assignment Brief
You are employed as a trainee building services design engineer. As you are heading towards the completion of your company training scheme your manager has decided that you have gained enough experience to complete a design for a building heating system. They have also decided that your depth of knowledge and understanding can be assessed, and an additional supplementary design and comfort information should also be supplied as part of the process.
(Tutor to provide drawings of a building and all the other necessary information required )
You have been asked to provide information and relevant design calculations regarding a proposed non-domestic heating system which would be suitable for the building provided, including any possible sustainable options and other information that you may require. Your work should make reference to industry standard guides and legislation. Task 1:
Your proposal should include:
An overview that explains the entire design process for the heating system.
A discussion of the information that will be required for a heating system design brief.
Task 2:
Your proposal should include:
Calculations to support the design of the system, including U values, heat loss and the total heating load.
Task 3
Your proposal should include:
An analysis of the Legislation and Regulations that affect the design, installation, operation and health and safety aspects of the heating system.
Unit Learning Outcomes:
LO3 Design a non-domestic heating system for a given building type.
LO4 Justify the selection of nondomestic heating system components and installation strategy.
Assignment Brief and Guidance:
Assignment Brief
You are employed as a trainee building services design engineer by a medium-sized building services
engineering firm. Having completed the analysis of heating loads (from Assessment 1), you are now asked to undertake the design of the heating system and the various necessary components.
You have been provided with the drawings of a building and all the other necessary information about it, and you have the heating load analysis already completed.
(Tutor to provide drawings of a building and all the other necessary information required same as for Assignment 1 )
Based on the information within the assessment brief you should:
Task 1
Design the heating system, specifying the heat emitters to be used
Consider alternative strategies to support sustainability Task 2
Calculate the sizes of pipework necessary for the installation
Calculate resistance in the index circuit
Analyse and justify your design and component selection. Task 3
Critically analyse a range of sustainable options suitable for the heating system in a given building.

All You Need to Know About N5E09 Principles of Heating Services Design and Installation Assignment
The N5E09 Principles of Heating Services Design and Installation is part of a course aimed at helping learners understand the core principles behind the design and setup of heating systems in buildings. This assignment allows students to explore how heating systems are planned, designed, and installed while following industry standards and regulations.
What’s the Main Purpose of N5E09 Assignment?
The goal of the N5E09 assignment is to make sure you understand how to design heating services that are safe, energy-efficient, and suitable for different types of buildings. It also helps you learn how to work out heating requirements, choose the right equipment, and plan proper installation.
You won’t just be looking at radiators and boilers, you’ll also learn how the whole system works together to heat homes, offices, or other spaces comfortably and safely.
Key Topics Covered in the Assignment
Here are the main things you’ll likely need to cover in your work:
1. Heat Loss Calculations
You’ll learn how to work out how much heat is lost through walls, windows, floors, and roofs. This helps decide how much heating is needed to keep a building warm.
2. System Design
You’ll explore different types of heating systems—like wet central heating, underfloor heating, or warm air systems—and decide which one best fits the building type.
3. Energy Efficiency
Modern buildings aim to be energy-efficient. You’ll need to think about how to design systems that use less energy, which is better for the environment and cheaper for users.
4. Choosing the Right Components
This includes boilers, radiators, thermostats, pipes, valves, and controls. You must show you know how to size and select the right ones for the job.
5. Regulations and Safety
You’ll need to understand current UK laws and building regulations—like Part L of the Building Regulations, Gas Safe rules, and other safety standards.
What Skills Will You Develop?
By completing this assignment, you’ll build the following practical and technical skills:
Problem-solving – Working out heat requirements and system layouts
Technical drawing – Creating plans and schematics for installations
Research skills – Looking into products, technologies, and best practices
Communication – Explaining your design choices clearly in writing
Health & safety awareness – Making sure designs meet legal standards
How to Approach Principles of Heating Services Design and Installation Assignment
Here are a few simple tips to help you get started:
Read the brief carefully – Make sure you understand exactly what is being asked.
