Case Study:
A 34-year-old woman, Sarah Thompson Drayton, and her groom, Daniel Drayton 26, had severe learning disabilities and their local adult social care services tried to stop them from marrying for nearly a year. "They said Daniel could be charged with raping Sarah. They told us our vicar could be in trouble too," said Thompson.
Six months after the local authority`s adult social care team were first notified about Thompson Drayton`s wedding, she received a capacity assessment which was carried out against both her and her mother`s wishes. It was designed to determine whether she was sufficiently able to have sexual relations and get married without a high risk of abuse or exploitation. She failed the assessment, despite the assessors acknowledging that she had a strong understanding of relationships and marriage.
