Social exclusion refers to the process through which individuals or groups are marginalised from full participation in society due to various factors such as poverty, discrimination, or social disadvantage. This essay critically examines how social exclusion is experienced by a domestic abuse victim who has fled the family home, exploring how it is sustained, its impacts on the individual and their children, and the broader societal consequences.
Understanding Social Exclusion in Context
Social exclusion is not simply about economic deprivation; it is multidimensional, involving limited access to housing, healthcare, education, and social networks (Levitas et al., 2007). A domestic abuse victim who has fled their home often experiences multiple forms of exclusion. They may face homelessness, financial instability, mental health struggles, and lack of support systems. This intersectionality makes it harder to reintegrate into society, especially for mothers with young children who must balance safety with caregiving (Humphreys & Joseph, 2004).
Perpetuation of Social Exclusion
Social exclusion is often reinforced by institutional and structural failures. Victims may find refuge services limited, face delays in accessing benefits, or experience judgment from professionals. According to the Women’s Aid (2023), funding cuts have reduced refuge spaces, meaning many women are turned away or forced to return to unsafe situations. The welfare system, although meant to support, can act as a barrier through complex procedures and conditionality.
In addition, social stigma and victim-blaming attitudes can discourage victims from seeking help. Language barriers, immigration status, or lack of digital access may further exclude certain groups. The lack of trauma-informed services deepens this cycle of exclusion.
Impact on the Individual and Family
The personal impact of social exclusion is severe. Victims may suffer from PTSD, anxiety, depression, and isolation (WHO, 2021). Children exposed to domestic abuse and housing instability are more likely to face educational disruption, emotional distress, and behavioural issues (Radford et al., 2011). These early adverse experiences can have lifelong effects, affecting brain development and future social integration (Public Health England, 2015).
The instability that follows fleeing abuse, temporary housing, disrupted schooling, and reduced social contact, makes rebuilding life extremely difficult. Without adequate support, the risk of re-victimisation or entering new abusive relationships increases.
