In recent years multi-sectoral governance initiatives have been assuming new regulatory functions in the global economy. These initiatives have had very different levels of success, however, in terms of, 1) how well they facilitate participation by different stakeholder groups, and, 2) how effectively they manage to address the social and environmental problems that they have been designed to regulate.

Examining the initiative that your group presented during the group presentations, please write a 2,500-word essay comparing it to the case of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), as described in the article by Moog et al. (2015).

 How does your case compare to the case of the FSC, in terms of,

1)      the extent to which civic groups (NGOs) are empowered as regulatory actors

-and-

2)      how effective the initiative has been at regulating the companies and/or sector, in order to solve the social and/or environmental problems it was designed to address?

Your essay should systematically compare the two governance initiatives, addressing both of the criteria above, by engaging with theoretical frameworks and concepts from core and suggested readings on the module, as well as with a range of additional academic sources that you identify through your own research.

When discussing theories about corporate-NGO interactions and different perspectives on multi-sectoral regulatory initiatives, you should be sure to cite academic articles from management and other social science journals.
