Journal Week 29 – Practicum Reflection
During Week 29 of my practicum placement, I continued to develop my understanding of professional practice while actively contributing to several task areas within the agency. According to my Typhon Weekly Hour Log, I completed a total of 22 practicum hours this week. Approximately 8 hours were spent participating in patient assessment and observation activities alongside my supervising professional. These experiences allowed me to observe how clinical information is gathered, interpreted and documented in real practice settings.
A further 6 hours were dedicated to reviewing patient records and updating documentation within the agency’s information system. This task helped strengthen my understanding of accurate record keeping and the importance of maintaining confidentiality when handling sensitive health information. I also spent 4 hours attending team meetings and case discussions with other professionals working within the organisation. These discussions provided valuable insight into how interdisciplinary collaboration supports effective patient care. The remaining 4 hours were spent completing research related to ongoing projects within the agency and preparing documentation required for my practicum learning objectives.
Over the course of this week, I noticed clear progress in my confidence and professional identity. I feel more comfortable communicating with colleagues and asking questions when I need clarification. Observing experienced professionals has helped me better understand the practical application of theoretical knowledge learned during my academic studies. In particular, I am gaining a stronger appreciation of the ethical responsibilities involved in professional healthcare practice.
One area that I would like additional supervision on is improving my ability to interpret clinical data more efficiently. While I am gradually becoming more familiar with the systems used in the agency, I sometimes need additional time to understand how information is organised. I believe further guidance and practice will help strengthen this skill.
Overall, Week 29 was a productive learning experience that contributed positively to my professional development and understanding of real world healthcare practice.
