The GROW Model and the wheel of Life.

 

Miriam ( name changed ) is a 32-year-old woman, she is a single parent with one child and she is the only child at home. Her biological mother died when she was 9 years old and she was raised by her step mother. She reports not having a good relationship with her step mother when growing up. Her father was almost absent in her life as he was working away when she grew up. But she reports having a good relationship with her parents now. She has no contact with her biological mother’s family. She immigrated to work abroad in the past 2 years. Her child was born full term by caesarean section. Currently she is not taking any chronic medication. She has been into therapy when she was a teenager due to a toxic relationship with her step mother when growing up. She quitted therapy before any intervention due to the fear that her stepmother would find out that she is in therapy since she was referred by the school counsellor. She recently started a new job and she is not coping at work. She sleeps during work hours due to lack of sleep at home and reports absenteeism at work. She feels that the workload is overwhelming and complicated. She always feels angry, frustrated, or diminished in her work role. She is demotivated to work and  to meet her target. The country transition has caused her a lot of stress  her supervisor   referred her to coaching . 

We contracted for 6 sessions including an cemetry session. The client attended all six sessions. During our sessions the clients focused on assessing her readiness and the willingness for change and adjustment. Since change and transition can trigger a range of emotions , from excitement , fear to anxiety . During the session I had to acknowledge and validate clients emotions, help the clients to express their emotions and manage them. We also used the strength technique where I assisted the client to reframe their negative thoughts and focus on their strength.  During the coaching  sessions we also focused on developing cultural awareness and sensitivity and it came out that her work performance was mainly affected by the culture difference.So encourage the client to research  the local culture, costumes and norms and learn from the interactions with others in the new country.  

I used techniques such as listening, empathetic , reflection,and open-ended questions to carete safe and supporting space for clients.

Result: 

The clients did achieve her goals, she now able to appreciate the diversity  rather than being stressed,  she now calm , she was able to communicate with colleagues effectively with fear of being misunderstood , her work performance improved. She was able to build up nextworks in their new locations. She was able to attend events, joining online groups and doing voluntary work in her local arrer
