All You Need to Know About SHN6022: Valued Ageing
What Valued Ageing Means
Valued ageing is about making sure older people are respected, included, and supported in society. It looks beyond just growing old and focuses on living with dignity, independence, and purpose. The idea is that ageing should not be seen only as a period of decline but as a stage of life with opportunities, wisdom, and contribution.
Key Principles of Valued Ageing
-
Dignity and Respect
-
Every older person deserves to be treated with kindness and equality.
-
Age should not reduce their human rights or social value.
-
-
Independence
-
Supporting older adults to make their own choices in health, housing, and daily life.
-
Encouraging self-care and community participation where possible.
-
-
Inclusion and Belonging
-
Ageing people should not be isolated.
-
Communities need to create spaces where older people feel connected.
-
-
Recognition of Contribution
-
Many older adults volunteer, care for grandchildren, or share life experience.
-
Society should value these contributions instead of focusing only on their needs.
-
-
Healthy Ageing
-
Promoting physical activity, balanced diet, regular health checks, and mental wellbeing.
-
Preventing illness is as important as treating it.

Ageism: Discrimination against people because of age can reduce opportunities for work, social life, and healthcare.

Health Issues: Chronic diseases, mobility problems, and cognitive decline may limit independence.
-
Loneliness: Social isolation is common, especially after retirement or loss of a partner.
-
Economic Barriers: Some older adults face poverty or limited pensions.
-
Digital Divide: Many struggle with technology, which can reduce access to services and communication.

Conclusion
Valued ageing means recognising older people as active, respected, and important members of society. It is about more than health; it is about identity, belonging, dignity, and contribution. By addressing barriers like ageism, loneliness, and poor access to services, we can build a society where ageing is truly valued.
