Task 1 – Essay (LO1)

Leadership and Management in Practice

Introduction

In modern organisations, success depends on the balance between leadership and management. While both are essential, they involve different skills and approaches. Managers focus on structure and control, whereas leaders focus on people and direction. Understanding both helps individuals become more effective in organisational roles.

Hard Management vs Soft Leadership Skills

Hard management skills are practical and task-focused. These include planning, organising, budgeting, and monitoring performance. For example, a manager setting deadlines and allocating resources is using hard management skills.

Soft leadership skills, on the other hand, are people-focused. These include communication, emotional intelligence, motivation, and influencing others. A leader inspiring a team during a difficult project is using soft leadership skills.

The key difference is that management ensures tasks are completed efficiently, while leadership ensures people are motivated and aligned with goals. In practice, both must work together.

Key Leadership Theories

One important theory is Trait Theory, which suggests that effective leaders have natural qualities such as confidence and integrity. For example, a CEO who remains calm under pressure often gains trust from employees.

Another is Behavioural Theory, which focuses on leadership styles rather than personality. A democratic leader who involves team members in decisions can improve engagement.

Contingency Theory argues that there is no single best leadership style. Instead, leaders must adapt based on the situation. For example, in a crisis, an autocratic approach may be more effective.

Finally, Transformational Leadership focuses on inspiring and motivating employees to exceed expectations. A manager encouraging innovation and personal growth is applying this theory.

Key Management Theories

Scientific Management (Taylor) focuses on efficiency and productivity through standardised processes. For example, factories using strict workflows to maximise output.

Administrative Management (Fayol) highlights functions such as planning, organising, leading, and controlling. These are still widely used in modern organisations.

Bureaucratic Theory (Weber) emphasises rules, hierarchy, and formal procedures. This is common in large organisations like government departments.

Human Relations Theory (Mayo) focuses on employee wellbeing and motivation. For example, recognising that employee satisfaction improves productivity.
