Submission deadline date and time

This assessment is worth 75% of the overall module mark.

How to submit Submission:

Please submit an electronic copy of your report via Turnitin on Blackboard. The electronic copy may be in either Word or PDF, and you should ensure that the file name includes your surname.

You are also required to provide evidence of your digital artefact. Submissions of further digital materials, such as apps, webpages, etc, must be agreed with your adviser and you should state in your report, what these are. In most cases this can be completed by submitting a URL to your Creative Hive account which provides access to the artefacts

Assessment task details and instructions Form and Content of the Final Project Report

Due to the varied nature of individual projects, each one will require different written sections. However, the general style of layout should be similar to that in academic works and journals. That is, there should be an introduction, the main body of the work, a conclusion, and a final reference list. Harvard referencing style should be utilised.

The practical work that took place must also be represented (pictures and/or screenshots may be used). You should discuss a drac outline of your project report with your adviser as they will be the first marker for your report.

The final project report should be 5000 words. Do not include references in the word count. You must state the word count at the end of your report

On successful completion of this assessment, you will be able to assess intended learning outcomes:

Knowledge and Understanding

  • Appraise research techniques, and refine objectives and scope for a substantial piece of work.
  • Manage, sustain, report on and critically appraise a substantial piece of work.
  • Create socware, or other practical outcomes/deliverables from their work, as part of a documented requirements process ]
  • Demonstrate an understanding how of to write a substantial document in a clear, precise and unambiguous manner

Transferable Skills and other AVributes

Communication

  • Take part in discussions
  • Read and respond to written material
    • Produce written material 2: (Problem Solving)
    • Implement solutions
    • Evaluate outcomes and methods

Managing Own Learning & Performance

  • Set targets and plan action
  • Follow plan to meet your targets
  • Appraise progress and revise plans accordingly
  • Reflect on planning and outcomes

Module Aims

  1. To allow the student to implement a previously defined project, related to an aspect of the degree programme, in depth and produce a scholarly and critical report as a result. This must include original work of a practical or research nature
  2. To encourage a critical awareness of the systems development lifecycle through the application of recognised approaches, which may include innovations in the processes or proposed solutions.
  3. To provide the opportunity for the student to demonstrate synthesis of information, ideas and practices, in the development of an innovative and creative solution together with an evaluation of that solution
  4. To encourage the student to demonstrate original thought, and the ability to structure knowledge in a manner that will improve understanding.

Word count/ duration

Your report should be 5000 words (+/- 10%).

Content beyond the specified word count will not considered for marking purposes.

Feedback arrangements

You should ask your advisor for feedback on your drac before it is submitted. It is your responsibility to provide the drac to your advisor in sufficient time for feedback to be provided.

You will receive the mark for this assignment with your results letter following the Board of Examiners meeting in June.

Title: Optimizing User Experience in E-commerce through AI-Powered Product Recommendation System

Introduction

E-commerce platforms face increasing pressure to provide personalized user experiences. This project explores the development and evaluation of an AI-powered recommendation system to enhance product discovery, increase user engagement, and improve sales conversions. The report documents the entire lifecycle of the system`s development, from conceptualization through implementation and evaluation.

Background and Literature Review

Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI), particularly in machine learning (ML), have enabled the development of sophisticated recommendation engines. Key studies (Smith, 2019; Chen & Zhang, 2020) highlight that AI-driven recommendations increase user satisfaction and retention. The literature also emphasizes the importance of usability (Nielsen, 2012), responsive design, and data privacy compliance (e.g., GDPR regulations).

Additionally, recommendation algorithms like collaborative filtering (Schafer et al., 2007), content-based filtering (Pazzani & Billsus, 2007), and hybrid models have been evaluated in past research. This project builds on these methodologies to create a tailored solution for a hypothetical e-commerce platform.

Project Aims and Objectives

Aim:
To design and develop an AI-powered product recommendation system that improves user experience and purchasing outcomes in e-commerce.

Objectives:

  • Investigate current AI recommendation systems and identify key functional requirements.

  • Develop a recommendation engine prototype using Python and integrate it with a demo website.

  • Test the system for accuracy, performance, and user satisfaction.

  • Evaluate the system’s compliance with ethical and legal standards.

Methodology

Research Techniques

A mixed-methods approach was adopted. Quantitative analysis was conducted on user interaction data, while qualitative feedback was collected via user testing sessions.

Development Approach

The project followed the Agile software development lifecycle, with iterative sprints and regular advisor feedback.

Tools and Technologies

  • Programming Language: Python (with libraries such as scikit-learn, pandas)

  • Framework: Flask for backend; HTML/CSS/JavaScript for frontend

  • Database: SQLite

  • Hosting Platform: Heroku (for online deployment)

System Design and Development

Requirements Analysis

Functional and non-functional requirements were gathered through online surveys and interviews.

Architecture

The system follows a client-server architecture with a RESTful API.

Algorithm Design

A hybrid model combining collaborative and content-based filtering was implemented.

Interface Design

User interface prototypes were created using Figma and validated through heuristic evaluation.
