Understanding Health Inequalities Through Psychology and Sociology
Health inequalities are a central concern in health and social care. They refer to differences in health outcomes between different population groups, often influenced by social, economic, and environmental factors. Both psychology and sociology offer valuable but different insights into why these inequalities exist and how they can be addressed.
Sociology and Health Inequalities
Sociology focuses on the structure of society and how social factors influence health. Sociologists argue that health inequalities are not random but are shaped by social class, income, education, ethnicity, and gender. One key concept in sociology is the social determinants of health, which include living conditions, employment, housing, and access to healthcare. For example, people in lower socio-economic groups often live in poorer housing and have limited access to nutritious food and quality healthcare. These conditions can lead to poorer health outcomes.
The work of Wilkinson and Marmot (2003) highlighted how social inequality affects health, showing that countries with large income gaps between the rich and poor have worse overall health outcomes. Sociologists often use large-scale data to understand how societal structures contribute to poor health in disadvantaged communities. Structural functionalism and conflict theory are two sociological perspectives used to analyse these issues. Conflict theory, in particular, argues that the healthcare system may reinforce social inequalities by favouring those with more resources.
Psychology and Health Inequalities
In contrast, psychology often looks at health inequalities from an individual perspective. It focuses on behavioural, cognitive, and emotional factors that influence health. Health psychologists examine how stress, health beliefs, and lifestyle choices (e.g., smoking, diet, exercise) contribute to different health outcomes. Psychological theories such as the Health Belief Model explain how a person’s perception of risk and ability to take action affects their health behaviours.
Psychologists also study the impact of mental health and stress on physical health. For example, someone living in poverty may experience chronic stress, which can weaken the immune system and lead to conditions like high blood pressure. While sociologists would look at poverty as a social structure, psychologists would examine how living in poverty affects an individual`s mental processes and behaviour.
