Although modern technologies enable richer models, they do not fully address earlier critiques. Links are still fragile, ownership of structure remains decentralised, and semantic consistency depends on voluntary adoption. Unlike early hypertext systems, there is no shared conceptual framework guiding link creation at a global level.

Furthermore, commercial incentives often prioritise engagement and monetisation over navigational clarity. Algorithmic feeds and recommendation systems replace explicit link structures with opaque decision making. This arguably moves the Web further away from the original hypertext ideal of user controlled exploration.
