This assignment is for the optional module, Law for Retail Jewellers.

1. You are helping to induct a new member of staff and they have been asking you some very searching questions. You have promised to follow up your discussion with some written information that:

   1. Explains the abbreviation `HVD’ and the associated legal obligations that this places on your business. (AC1.1)

   2. Explains the legal obligations relating to the display of prices on jewellery in the shop window. (AC1.1)

   3. Explain the legal obligations relating to the 28-day pricing rule. (AC1.1)

   4. Outlines the precautions that a jeweller would need to put in place to guard against the possibility of being accused of handling stolen goods. (AC1.2)

   5. Describes the consumer rights that customers have when buying jewellery (please use a jewellery specific example to illustrate each consumer right to your new member of staff). (AC1.5)

2. A known, elderly customer wants you to drill & fit a pendant loop (bail) to his QEII Full Sovereign loose coin, so that his son can wear it as a pendant. He has sent his son in to speak to you and you have promised to write down some information for the son to pass on to his father.

   • Can you undertake this task for your customer? Write some notes that advise your elderly customer on the law as applied to this jewellery alteration and suggest an alternative solution to their request. (AC1.3)

3. Mr. Brown is a regular customer and has emailed the store to enquire about buying a large solitaire diamond ring for his wife’s 40th birthday. At £16,250 this is a great sale that will certainly help the store to achieve its weekly sales target. Mr. Brown owns a car dealership and has asked if can pay for the ring in CASH.

   • Compile an email reply to Mr. Brown that:

   1. 1. Identifies any issues with his request;

      2. Outlines a possible payment solution;

      3. Describes the security questions and checks that you will need to discuss with Mr. Brown before any payment is taken. (AC1.4)
