Health promotion is the process of enabling people to take control over their health and improve it through awareness, education, and supportive interventions. In nursing practice, health promotion is a central responsibility as outlined in the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Conduct, which requires nurses to prioritise patient wellbeing and provide evidence-based advice. For this assignment, I have chosen to develop an e-poster focused on encouraging smoking cessation in adults aged 25–40 in London. The e-poster format was selected because it is highly visual, concise, and accessible to a wide audience, making it effective for sharing health information quickly. Smoking was chosen as the health topic because it remains one of the leading causes of preventable illness and death in the UK, despite national strategies aimed at reducing its prevalence. The target population is adults in working age who are more likely to be exposed to stress-related smoking habits, particularly in urban areas like London where smoking prevalence remains a local health challenge.
Contextual Background
Tobacco use continues to be a public health priority in the UK. According to NHS Digital, around 12.9% of adults in England were reported as smokers in 2022, with higher prevalence in deprived communities. In London, smoking contributes significantly to inequalities in health outcomes, including increased rates of respiratory illness, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. The local borough-level data shows variation, with some areas reporting smoking rates above the national average. Smoking is strongly linked to preventable hospital admissions, which place extra strain on NHS resources. By focusing on adults aged 25–40, the poster aims to intervene at a life stage where smoking-related health risks can still be reversed, supporting both individual health improvement and wider public health goals.
Health Behaviour to Influence
The key behaviour targeted in this project is smoking cessation. The aim is to encourage adults to either reduce or completely stop their tobacco consumption. By providing clear health information, statistics, and signposting to support services such as NHS Stop Smoking clinics, the poster is designed to motivate individuals to make a positive lifestyle change. The overall intention is to reduce the long-term burden of smoking-related illnesses on individuals, families, and health services.
Choice of Medium
The e-poster format was selected because it is highly accessible through digital platforms, including social media and healthcare websites. Posters are visually engaging, and when designed correctly, they provide information quickly and persuasively.
