1. Overview of the Innovative Practice

Project-Based Learning (PBL) is an educational innovation where students gain knowledge and skills by working on a project over an extended period of time. This method encourages students to explore real-world problems, ask questions, collaborate, and create a final product or presentation. It is designed to be student-centred, focusing on active learning rather than passive listening.

In PBL, a project is often introduced with a driving question that requires critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and various forms of communication. Students must explore the topic, conduct research, and produce a meaningful outcome that reflects their learning. Teachers act as facilitators, guiding students through their learning journey rather than directly delivering content.

For example, in a PBL science unit, students might be asked: “How can we reduce our school’s carbon footprint?” This question would lead students to explore environmental science, data collection, design solutions, and present their findings to the school community.
