To complete this task, you must choose one profession that you have an interest in. You need to explore the interpersonal skills required for best practice in that profession. Your findings should be presented as a written Case Study. It should be structured as follows:

Title: Professional Interpersonal Skills-a Case Study of [add title of chosen profession]

Introduction: Describe the main roles and responsibilities of the chosen profession. Outline key standards of practice from a related regulatory body, focussing on those related to interpersonal skills.

Main Body: You should examine in detail the use of verbal and non-verbal skills used by members of the profession as they interact within the following contexts:

• Professional and patient/client/service user

• Professional and other professionals

• Professional and patient/client/service users’ significant others

As you detail the use of verbal and non-verbal skills, you must consider how cultural diversity can impact on interaction. You should complete the main body with a general evaluation of the importance of being aware of cultural diversity in professional practice.

The introduction of your essay should outline the basis of your reflection. For example, you might reflect on your skills by thinking about how they have been demonstrated during any existing employment experiences and or college activities.

The main body of your essay must include an analysis of:

• the strengths of your interpersonal skills and

• areas you think you need to develop

and

• an evaluation of different ways in which you could build on your skills, addressing areas that need to be developed

GD1: Achieving a Merit on this GD involves demonstrating a very good grasp of the unit material. This is shown through the content of your work. A Merit means that most of your content is correct. There may be some errors. If your work is not very clearly presented, this may undermine the evidence of your understanding.

GD2: This GD relates, not simply to your understanding of the knowledge, but to your ability to use/apply it with very good levels of accuracy in response to both tasks. For example, the Case Study demands accurately applying knowledge of a chosen profession’s expectations regarding interpersonal skills, and a wider awareness of cultural diversity. The Reflective Essay requires evaluation of own skills-not just description of them.

GD7: A very good engagement with the overall demands of the brief will be demonstrated by your work generally:

• Conforming to the structure and presentation requested for each of the tasks

• Demonstrating very good levels of accuracy regarding spelling, and punctuation so that the work reads clearly.

• Making a very good attempt to evidence the use of sources.

Overall, to achieve a Merit you should engage very well with the general demands of the brief in terms of demonstrating knowledge of the unit’s topics and an ability to apply this knowledge very well to the various tasks. Additionally, the wider academic writing skills (research, referencing etc.) should be demonstrated to a very good standard.

A Distinction means that the content of your work is correct. This does not require perfection, but any inaccuracies must be few and relatively minor. If your work is not very clearly presented, this may undermine the evidence of your understanding, so a Distinction requires very clear presentation of your work in all its forms.

GD2: This GD relates, not simply to your understanding of the knowledge, but to your ability to use/apply it with excellent levels of accuracy in response to both tasks. For example, the Case Study demands accurately applying knowledge of a chosen profession’s expectations regarding interpersonal skills, and a wider awareness of cultural diversity.
