Demographers focus on three key processes when studying population change: fertility, mortality, and migration. Fertility refers to the number of children born within a population. It is usually measured by the total fertility rate, which indicates how many children a woman is likely to have over her lifetime (Weeks, 2015). Mortality deals with the patterns of death, including life expectancy and infant mortality rates. It helps reveal health conditions, medical advancements, and risks affecting populations. Migration involves the movement of people across regions or countries and is particularly significant for shaping cultural diversity, labour supply, and population growth in specific areas (Poston & Bouvier, 2017).
Currently, the most critical process in understanding the United States population is migration. While fertility has fallen below replacement levels and mortality continues to improve gradually due to healthcare, migration has become the main driver of demographic change. The U.S. has experienced a steady inflow of immigrants, which not only sustains population growth but also reshapes the country’s social and economic structures. Immigration influences the age composition of the population, contributes to labour markets, and alters cultural dynamics, making it essential to contemporary demographic analysis (Weeks, 2015).
