Undergraduate Major Project Plan
Question 1. Identify and analyse three strategic issues facing Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS)
Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) play a vital role in providing psychological and emotional support for children and young people. However, CAMHS faces several strategic issues that influence its ability to deliver high-quality care.
The first major issue is increasing demand for services. Rising awareness of mental health, combined with higher prevalence of conditions such as anxiety, depression, and eating disorders among young people, has led to more referrals. This creates long waiting times and overstretched staff, undermining accessibility and effectiveness. The demand is rising faster than available resources, meaning CAMHS must strategically balance capacity and care quality.
A second issue is funding and resource allocation. CAMHS often competes for funding within wider NHS priorities. Limited financial resources restrict recruitment of qualified staff, investment in new facilities, and development of preventive programmes. Without adequate funding, CAMHS risks offering inconsistent services across regions, which impacts fairness and sustainability.
The third issue is integration with schools, social care, and community services. Mental health challenges in young people are complex and require coordinated responses. However, fragmentation between health, education, and social systems makes early intervention difficult. For instance, delays in sharing information between schools and mental health professionals can slow down assessments. Effective multi-agency collaboration is therefore a key strategic need.
In summary, CAMHS must respond to growing demand, address funding pressures, and improve integration with partner services. These issues shape how the service maintains accessibility, quality, and equity while meeting its mission of supporting young people’s mental health.
Question 2. Identify and analyse three challenges facing Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS)
Building on the strategic issues, CAMHS faces three significant operational challenges.
The first is staff shortages and retention. Recruiting qualified psychiatrists, psychologists, and counsellors is difficult due to the demanding nature of the work and relatively lower pay compared to private practice. High staff turnover results in disrupted care for patients, while shortages mean longer waiting lists. Young people may wait months for assessments, delaying treatment and worsening conditions.
The second challenge is stigma surrounding mental health. Despite progress in public awareness, many children, parents, and communities still view mental illness negatively. This can discourage young people from seeking help early. Cultural stigma also creates inequality in access; for example, families from some ethnic minority backgrounds may be less likely to engage with CAMHS due to social perceptions or mistrust of healthcare institutions.
