Terry (white British) is a single father who has been looking after his two children, Amelia (5) and Jordan (9), by himself since Marion (black British), their mother and his partner, died 3 years ago. Amelia has just started school and is finding it hard to settle in and is wetting the bed at home. Terry is worried she doesn`t get enough attention from him and needs her mother. Terry struggles with whether he should keep Jordan in a mainstream school where he feels he doesn`t get enough support. The family have been referred to Children`s Services as Jordan has complex disabilities (he has been diagnosed as being on the Autistic Spectrum as well as having Cerebral Palsy). The case has been allocated to a social work student for assessment. Other professionals involved with the family (Pyhsiotherapist, OT and school) have described Terry as a good father who is always trying to do the best for his children; but there are some concerns about his ability to cope. Terry finds parenting very emotionally and physically draining. Finances are also very tight and the home is sparsely furnished with many basic items of daily living missing, and the children are sometimes hungry. Terry would like to provide more for his children, and is also desperate for a break. He talks about life having never been the same since Marion died, and says he doesn`t feel he can give the children what they need.
