What topic and research question did you pursue?

Do juvenile detention facilities meet the needs of the juveniles with mental health? Do they provide education and courses for self-improvement and formal education?

How is your research question relevant to your passions and interests in psychology and to your purpose?

Over the years I have been very compassionate about juveniles and psychology and how the two intertwine and meet on the same platform. Approximately 2/3 of juvenile detainees have some type of mental disorder (Grisso, 2004), and detention aggravates many existing mental conditions (Kashani et al., 1980). If the needs are not being met at the facility then what is the point of creating a therapeutic environment for the youth. My purpose is what I am is for and that is to make sure that the juveniles that I serve are in a better place when they leave my care.

Reflecting on the Library Research Knowledge Assessment, what skill areas were recommended for improvement and what skill areas did you do well on?

One of the area’s that I did well on was using key words and I also learned not to make your research question so broad when searching for articles. I must say I had a very hard time just trying to figure out the navigation of the library but with the help of my peer I feel that I have a much better handle on it. Area’s of improvement were use and or when searching for my topic.

What strategies did you use to locate relevant articles?

Time management was key at first, I was trying to get everything done fast and quick. I was trying to hurry up and come up with a topic but it was not something that I was passion about and he didn’t align with my purpose. So, I sat back and took my time and came up with research question.

Did you find Boolean commands confusing?

Yes, and I still don’t quite understand it.

What insights did I gather about my research question?

There is so many different avenues to my question and there is so much information for me to research.

What conclusions did you come to about the role of research in your future career vision?

Many juvenile detention centers lack funding to meet the need of juvenile with mental illnesses. The education that the juveniles are receiving are sometime not even at grade level and teachers in the detention are sometimes not even certified teachers.
