Sree decides to visit her neighbour Ritin, to see if he wants any shopping. Ritin is elderly and cannot always get to the shops if he is feeling unwell. Sree knocks on the door of Ritin’s house, but although she can hear noises inside, no-one comes to the door. Worried in case Ritin has fallen, Sree calls out ‘Hello’ and pushes open the door. She sees two figures on the staircase. One, a young man she does not recognise, pushes the other, who falls down four or five stairs to the bottom of the staircase. The young man then runs at Sree, screaming, ‘Out of the way or I’ll kill you!’. Sree steps back, but holds out her walking stick as the man runs past her and trips him up. He falls and knocks himself out on the concrete path.
The young man, whose name is Rob, is taken to the hospital where he is found to be concussed, and to have a broken jaw and a broken leg. When interviewed by the police, Rob admits to trying to burgle Ritin’s house, but denies wanting to hurt him. ‘I just wanted to get away’ he says. Ritin has a serious head injury and dies two days later in hospital.
