• Give your essay a title linking to the health topic you are doing health education on and the group you will educate e.g. Healthy Eating in Older People Health Education Session and Teaching Plan).

• Set out what you are going to discuss in your essay, in the order in which you will present it:
• This essay will discuss... tell the reader what you will cover in your essay in the order you will do it in.

• Critically define and analyse health literacy and learning need.
• What are the benefits of assessing learning needs.
• How you would undertake a learning needs assessment.
• How does assessing learning needs inform development of a teaching plan (the content and how it is structured and delivered).

Meeting the learning needs of the chosen group (sources and evidence must be cited)

• Why a teaching plan important.
• How have you tailored your teaching plan to meet the needs of your specific chosen group.
• What are the aim and objectives of your teaching and why have you chosen this aim and these objectives.

Relate this section to your teaching plan that you set out in the appendix.

Content, structure and delivery of the teaching plan (sources and evidence must be cited)

• What teaching methods have you used in your teaching plan and why.
• How have you taken the setting, where you will undertake the health education, into account in developing your teaching plan.
• What key learning and teaching have informed the development of your teaching plan.
• What communication theories and approaches have informed the delivery of your teaching plan
• Discuss how your approach - developed from your understanding of learning, teaching and communication theories - will bring out a change in knowledge, attitudes and behaviour in your chosen group.

Wrap up your discussion with some thoughts about:

• Your views on the value of health education and health educators (If you have not already covered this earlier).
• Your views on the value of theory in health education and health communication.

NOTE:

1. Remember your detailed teaching plan needs to be presented in an appendix (see essay template).
2. Cite Them Right Harvard citing and referencing is very important, poor referencing will affect your mark.
3. Stick to the word limit, a few extra 10-20 words is okay.
