The importance of niche tourism lies in its potential to support local economies while preserving cultural identity and social values. Niche tourism can have positive socio-cultural effects, particularly when it encourages the preservation of local culture, language, religion, and traditional practices. In many destinations, niche tourism provides incentives to protect heritage sites, revive traditional crafts, and maintain cultural festivals that might otherwise decline. It can also improve quality of life by generating employment, improving infrastructure, and increasing community pride.

Cultural heritage tourism focuses on experiencing the history, traditions, and cultural expressions of a destination. This includes visits to historical sites, museums, indigenous communities, festivals, and religious landmarks. One of the strongest positive impacts of cultural heritage tourism is the preservation of culture. In destinations such as Kyoto in Japan, heritage tourism has encouraged the protection of traditional architecture, tea ceremonies, and religious practices. Local communities benefit from renewed interest in their traditions, which strengthens cultural identity and intergenerational knowledge transfer.
Similarly, in Peru, cultural tourism linked to Machu Picchu and Inca heritage has created strong cultural pride among local communities. Indigenous traditions, languages, and crafts have gained international recognition, helping communities maintain their cultural practices. Revenue from tourism has also supported cultural education and restoration projects.
Despite these benefits, cultural heritage tourism can also create socio-cultural challenges. In some cases, culture becomes a performance rather than a lived experience. For example, in parts of Bali, traditional dances and ceremonies are sometimes adapted to suit tourist schedules rather than religious meaning. This can weaken the spiritual value of cultural practices and create tension within communities. However, eco-tourism is not free from socio-cultural problems. In some regions, external investors dominate eco-tourism projects, limiting community control and decision making. This can lead to unequal power relationships and resentment among local residents.
